My Personal Story
" Hi, I’m Shane Cameron, founder of Clean Start Academy.
My journey didn’t begin with qualifications, connections, or a clear roadmap. I left school with minimal GCSEs and knew almost immediately that academic education wasn’t for me. I’m not wired to sit in a classroom learning things that feel disconnected from real life. If I can’t see the purpose, I can’t lock in. I tried college twice. Both times, I walked away within weeks. Not because I was lazy, but because the structure didn’t match who I was.
The turning point came when I joined the army.
That environment didn’t just give me discipline, it revealed my strengths. Over seven years of service, I learned leadership in its rawest form. I discovered that people don’t all respond the same way, and real leadership is about understanding individuals. When to push, when to support, when to demand more, and when to build someone up. I learned how to bring the best out of people, even when they didn’t believe in themselves yet. That ability to develop others has stayed with me ever since.
When I left the army to be closer to my young son, I moved into civilian work. Virgin Media, estate agency, dock work. None of it fulfilled me. Dock work suited my physical nature, but the ceiling was low. The pay was capped. I knew deep down I wasn’t willing to spend my life surviving paycheque to paycheque.
I never believed successful people were better than me.
I believed they had simply found their lane, and I hadn’t found mine yet.
So I created it.
I started my first business with nothing more than a bucket and a squeegee as a window cleaner. I reinvested everything. I learned on the job. I expanded into pressure washing, then specialist exterior cleaning. Two years later, I now run one of the leading roof cleaning companies on the south coast of England.
In our third year, we’re on track to turn over £350,000, with a small, dedicated and trusted team of three people. We’re still growing, and this is only the beginning.
More importantly than the numbers, I now have freedom.

Clean Start Academy was built from everything I had to learn the hard way: the wasted money, the wrong equipment, bad marketing, poor advice, mistakes on jobs, and the lack of real guidance.
